Yet Nothing moved my fingers To the key board My feelings to the words My words to my expression Exploration Discovery Of their content
Except After a while By this white This white and this black -and this white and this red Of Martha White’s weavings
My imagination was caught
She uses venetian blinds To make art!
I’m caught
And she weaves and sculpts Like other millinery women In Africa before her
Rounding the woven elements Into infinite mysteries of form Containing Caressing Opening the space around them -to be contained
Then On the wall This piece enthralls me; Woven Like the other pieces With white thin venetian blinds With defining blacks interwoven In a triangle Meant for hanging
So gracious In its fluidity -as if it were a purse? Maybe Vaguely An ice-cream cone?
But it’s lots more fun Than that For my curious eyes That love the front ornament So feminine So soft So 1600′s time fashion With two Most delicate ribbons White and red…
But it’s lots more fun Than that And deceiving
Because On closer examination It turns out to be A computer fan And cables! Turned to ribbons In my mind!
So I wrap my mind In her weaving And let Martha White Lead me
To a dimension of sculptures Where the old forms And the new recycling ways Find their niche And sing A pragmatic beauty That I hadn’t seen before…
By Leticia Huber Port Townsend, WA Ekphrastic Poetry Reading 2009
This sculpture was part of an exhibit at NortWind Arts Gallery, in Port Townsend. The sculpture is woven with Venetian Blinds, and ornated in the front with a computer fan. This very unique sculpture, inspired the poem above.
This exceptional sculpture is product of the creativity of Martha White.
Just like everything Allison and Aletia do at the www.MadronaMindBody.com , in Fort Worden, PT, WA, the event of Conscious Movement dance and music -with blessed Master Vinn Marti, was extraordinary:
Special SoulFull Sunday
A dancing community of more than a hundred of us Dancers gathered here — (Plus -at least- other 50 Sufi dancers gathered in another of their glorious rooms.)
No love, no detail was spared…
This morning was a fair corollary for this 4 Day Retreat at the MMI… Enjoy the energy… AND, maybe, next time you will
Congressman Norm Dicks addresses the Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce…
His “call” is strong, and a large group of persons hears his words attentively…
The Fort Worden Commons Meeting room has extra chairs -even against the walls, to house the attendance…so invested in getting direct and clear answers to their questions about the Health Reform…Mr. Dicks is well prepared to answer “official” answers (?)…But this crowd is direct and demanding. They want their answer in plain English!
What a week-end in P.T. this lovely first week-end in September 2009!
The Leader became it’s young 20!… Andy Mackie filled the air and the hearts with music… and, Artisans-On-Taylor starts its new page!
Around Teresa Verraes-Landis, all is full hearts and big smiles!
Her own sparks, have brought the spot-light on many new, interesting and VERY talented talents.
For these past brilliant years, Rachel -magnificent photographer in her own right, has been Teresa’s right hand!
With the same charm and sense of humor that she “does her hair” for the camera -plus her wisdom and common sense, she has brought in friends -and business- to Artisans On Taylor…
Ubiquitous Laura Lee helps here and there,-wherever smarts do the trick!
Few more powerful inspiring examples of Port Townsend women than Michelle Sandoval -magnificent human being, splendid Real Estate business woman, and Mayor of our City; and Teresa Verraes-Landis. creatress of what we have come to know as one of our most intriguing and fully fledged galleries: “Artisans On Taylor”.
Friends with artists of all specialties, it is not surprising to see Teresa enjoying conversation with a splendid poetess: Bonnie Greenley
To this so special scene comes a very special person, Anna – Who “dreamed this gallery”… and a few years after, has bought it from Teresa!…”A dream come true”…says Anna with a joyful smile…
They both share this love for art and beautiful creations…
They both believe in the inexhaustible talent of our local artists and artisans -as reflected in the name of the gallery itself…
Soul-sisters who are definitely committed to Art, service and community…
During “Gallery Walk”, this past Saturday, September, 5th, 2009, many of us shared this official “passing of the Torch” in between Teresa and Ann – and one shares the feeling of a Precious friendship while around them…Welcome, Anna, to your dream; so that it may be the ground for the realization of the dreams of many others-within yours ; )
Theresa, we know you’ll grow more powerful wings, yet, to protect and promote Art and Artists galore!
No heart, no brains and no arms would be better to hold and see them grow to their best expression!
Portland will be richer with your presence -and, of course, you have here sooo many loving homes looking forward to your news -and visits!
