Phill Johnson at the mic reports on the census… Kris Nelson listens to him from the lectrum…

Then comes Carol McGough, owner of the successful and prestigious James House -until recently- for the past 21 years… Smartly -as all she does- although she sold The James House to private owners… she kept her Bungalows on the Bluff to -profit from her years of bright advertising?…and- still serve and delight the tourism.

She talks about the phenomenal development of the “Bed and Breakfast” industry in the world…AND, particularly in our Port Townsend -where she foresees great opportunities IF we, as individuals -and as a City- realize our very UNIQUE assets in town…Such as unique birds, unique classes (unique people? Your reporter wonders…)… and promote them as our assets: As a “Can’t miss this!!!” factor for the public of the world.
She, from the moment she got in touch with her “INNkeeper heart” while traveling through Europe, has been in the habit of inquiring…”What’s your biggest concern, as an INNkeeper”?…”What’s your biggest asset, as an INNKeeper?”… “How can we best serve you, as a guest”… “How would you prefer to be cared for as a guest?”…”How can be best serve your needs as a guest?”…ALWAYS, it seems, in contact with what is happening to people and with people…She invites us to do the same…

And she amazes us with comparative stats from 21 years ago -and today… Specially the “development” of the “Private Gate Away” industry in our city…
Through the years, when we hear her words, we realize that she’s always been very attentive to trends and those who develop them: people. The travelers, our guests.
She’s found that offering the highest quality and attention, being of service to their needs as mere travelers, as visitors with a personal purpose, or as business visitors, is the only way to thrive by well serving them.
When Chamber President -Elect Kris Nelson brings her smile to thank Carol -her friend and once business mentor- and to close the session, Carol’s closing words tell us that – although she realizes this is an industry that requires dedication and attention, in itself- it also invites visionary planning from the city -as not to create unnecessary divisions -that can destabilize the town- when maybe favoring one sector of the hospitality industry, versus widening the vision towards the future. Back in that visionary ability, with the City supporting as strongly the retail, the restaurant, and the hospitality industries, the three will blossom in an indispensable balance; taxes will flow, economy and quality of life will thrive, AND – your writer reckons- with such quality of life, real estate values will be preserved and increased…
With much applause, we all thanked Carol for her intelligent, frank, and down-to-earth presentation.

On the way to the Pope Marine building, in Port Townsend…
Trees, architecture, dock…a feeling beyond our time…
At the splendid presentation, Rick Sepler -Planning/DSD Director was impeccable host, inquiring if there were any needs for clarification…Yet, the points listed clearly on large easels, were there to well state what was willed during the very attended City meeting…
The beautiful and windy morning seemed warm -inside the Pope Marine- with such copious attendance.
Attendance ranging from that of Port Townsend’s ubiquitous City Mayor Michelle Sandoval, to other Heads of Department in the City, to any citizen interested and participating… After a moment of conversation with Rick Sepler, this reporter learned that -as we have a beautifully Victorian City -we also have in it Victorian infrastructures to be revised.
Specially the side walks concern him.
He invited me to visit one of the under town corridors – and pay attention to the ceiling’s precarious conditions.
The City, he says, has already received from FEMA $3′000,000 to work, reinforce or replace several of the affected (by time) side walks.
Following his invitation, it is very easy to see dire need for what he tells us.
Yet, the concern of this writer are the trees.
Port Townsend’s center of charm is located probably Down Town.
It is this charm what brought us all in, our investments, and daily purchases…as well as those of our clients, customers and visitors…
It is thanks to this so special charm that our retail, restaurant and hospitality businesses have not only “survived” through the years, but bloomed…
In looking for reasons to find it so powerfully attractive; this writer realizes how rarely a Town (or City) feels fully -and richly- expressed.
Port Townsend is one of those rare Towns (Cities).
Port Townsend is 100% well expressed thanks to the presence of all its elements Down Town:
1 People,
2 Architecture,
3 Water Front,
4 Flowers,
5 Stores,
6 Restaurants
7 Services
8 Trees
Dismissing any of these elements, will take away 1/8 th of the super charming total expression of Down Town Port Townsend.
To this, Rick wisely has planned on re-forestation of the Down Town area streets. “No little twigs”, he states. “Good size trees to replace these ones -as you can see them on Monroe street”
At this, Terry Reckord, Principal of MacLeod Reckord, specializing in Urban design and Landscape Architecture -from Seattle- cheerfully offers to provide us with copies of Down Town Port Townsend -as it was originally.
As soon as they come, you will have them up here in the Port Towsend Peeps to enjoy and compare.
Interesting, endearing and fun how well we’ve preserved our “jewel” Town.
It seems to this reporter our Down Town could hardly be in better hands.
Yet, it’s good and healthy to walk it’s changes all of us, together hand-in-hand, so we all bring our lives to the project, which can only bloom that way.

When it comes to art and creativity, if Teresa had created “magic” for us at Artisans On Taylor, Anne has brought her own treasure through our eyes, and into our hearts !!!
It’s definitely ONE LOVE – two expressions of it -equally compelling and engaging…

- Same space, same charm, different artist!!!

- Inviting soft shapes, and orange, green and charcoal to amaze, charm and relax (!)you…

- Rachel Ganapoler – a splendid photographic artist herself- is in charge…

- Her water abstracts and marine images are a true treat…

- Her photographic “eye” is privileged!
