A phone booth in the middle of Black Rock City?…

Thanks to each and every one of you for your help in making our
strange phone booth dream not only a reality, but a success at Burning
Man this year. All told, Excellent Adventure served up over 4,100
connections during the 10 days the booths were deployed! Granted, 80%
of those calls were people pretending to be god, and another 10% were
folks actually hoping to dial out for pizza, but that leaves a full
10% of calls placed in good fun – a fine split in my book.
The thing we least expected, however, was the booths’ ability to bring
complete strangers together. Placed 150 feet (about one city block)
apart along esplanade between two major landmarks on the playa, each
booth managed to haul folks in without them noticing the other phone.
The expressions when callers realized that they were talking to a real
live nearby person were priceless. Several times, we even saw callers
run out to meet each other face-to-face, then head off to new
adventures together. To paraphrase MaBell “reach out and touch
someone”[.. with lasers]. All told, our goal of revitalizing stale
phone habits were met — and how!
