Ekphrastic Poem…by Leticia Huber
To enter the Center
Of Arts
And open myself
To this breathful of color
Textures
And creativity
It was a tangible vibration
My body
-and its senses-
Could feel
As you would feel
Jumping into warm waters
Or opening a long Winter’s door
To the blossoming of Spring
Then the separation
I walked around looking
Making up my mind
Mindlessly judging
Merits
Powers
Charms
Techniques
Connection
In the end…
Yet
Nothing moved my fingers
To the key board
My feelings to the words
My words to my expression
Exploration
Discovery
Of their content
Except
After a while
By this white
This white and this black
-and this white and this red
Of Martha White’s weavings
My imagination was caught
She uses venetian blinds
To make art!
I’m caught
And she weaves and sculpts
Like other millinery women
In Africa before her
Rounding the woven elements
Into infinite mysteries of form
Containing
Caressing
Opening the space around them
-to be contained
Then
On the wall
This piece enthralls me;
Woven
Like the other pieces
With white thin venetian blinds
With defining blacks interwoven
In a triangle
Meant for hanging
So gracious
In its fluidity
-as if it were a purse?
Maybe
Vaguely
An ice-cream cone?
But it’s lots more fun
Than that
For my curious eyes
That love the front ornament
So feminine
So soft
So 1600’s time fashion
With two
Most delicate ribbons
White and red…
But it’s lots more fun
Than that
And deceiving
Because
On closer examination
It turns out to be
A computer fan
And cables!
Turned to ribbons
In my mind!
So
I wrap my mind
In her weaving
And let
Martha White
Lead me
To a dimension of sculptures
Where the old forms
And the new recycling ways
Find their niche
And sing
A pragmatic beauty
That I hadn’t seen before…

This sculpture was part of an exhibit at NortWind Arts Gallery, in Port Townsend. The sculpture is woven with Venetian Blinds, and ornated in the front with a computer fan. This very unique sculpture, inspired the poem above.
This exceptional sculpture is product of the creativity of Martha White.
